Giving Report February 2018

Your Donations at Work February 2018

During the fourth quarter of 2017, $13,010 was given to assist at-risk teens and young adults who have aged out of foster care (between 18-22 years old) in Volusia, Seminole, Orange, Brevard and Osceola Counties. Details are listed below, but first we want to let you know how your donations positively impact the youth in our community and particularly the following young person:

Derek spent two years at a local foster care group home. He was determined to make something of himself so he concentrated on getting good grades. When he turned 18, Derek pursued his educational goals at Daytona State College while working part-time. Derek earned many WingsNet incentives through the years which helped him to focus and excel in school. Now, at age 22, he has earned his AA degree in Health Management Services. His dream is to work in the social services field and help others. One of his case managers said, “Although there were hard times, Derek never let it get him down. He never gave up.” We’re proud of Derek and wish him much continued success!

Aging out of Foster Care

According to the National Foster Youth Institute, foster youth aging out of the system (between 18 and 22 years old) encounter numerous challenges on their road to becoming independent. Here are a few eye-opening statistics:

  • 20% will become instantly homeless after turning 18 and 33% will be homeless by 21
  • 25% will not graduate or be able to pass their GED
  • 70% will become pregnant before the age of 21
  • 50% will be unable to find a job

Thank You

On behalf of the many at-risk youth you help by supporting Wings of Hope, we thank you. Individually we do make a difference. Together we change lives.
